·
Port measurements
o
Since it was high tide during the morning, measurements
were done close to the shore.
o
Very shallow and muddy areas, close to the
mangroves.
o
Boat and DUGS got entangled in a submerged fishing
net and had to be cut loose.
o
The original DUGS buoy was lost – presumably it
also got entangled in the fishing net. In order to continue measurements, a
buoy from the boat was used. However, it was much larger than the original buoy
and caused significant drag. There is also the risk that its buoyancy lifted
the DUGS from the sediment.
o
Upon re-deployment, the rope from the buoy got twisted
around the Ethernet cable causing a bend. While this did not prevent the days’
measurements to be completed, it did cause some damage to the cable sleeve.
·
Debrief meeting
Thursday, 1 December 2022
·
Beach measurements
o
Second measuring of north beach
§
Analysis showed that more measurement lines were
needed along the northern beach for consistency and improved interpolation of
data.
§
Also, the Trimble rugged tablet went into “sleep
mode” during the first round of measurements and the area in front of Bahari
Beach Hotel did not have any data, and should be re-measured.
·
Port measurements
o
First round measurements
§
The damage from the previous days’ measurements
leaked water into cable and into the DUGS enclosure.
§
This leak created a short on the Ethernet port,
preventing PoE injection and no power was delivered to the system.
§
Unable to perform measurements
§
The system therefore had to be opened, dried,
and a new Ethernet port had to be crimped.
o
Second
round of measurements
§
Using the “re-crimped” system, a second round of
measurements were performed.
§
The aim was to measure the area of Port Reitz
leading into the river Mwache, and to cover a portion of the river.
§
Unfortunately, this area was extremely muddy
with a lot of mangroves, and the drag on the system was significant.
§
The DUGS fell stuck, and upon removal of the
system from the muddy sediment, power was again lost.
§
Another leak in the cable was found and a lot of
water made its way into the enclosure. This was exasperated by the excess water
in the cable from the previous days’ damage to the cable sleeve.
§
A short was again created on the Ethernet port,
but this time the MCA also showed water damage. Either the entire spectrum was
pushed into lower channels, or excessive counts were measured. Unfortunately,
these issues prevented further measurements.
·
Debrief meeting
·
Complete rebuilt of DUGS
o
The water damage forced an entire system rebuild.
The MCA brought from South Africa was fitted to the system and a new, dry,
Ethernet cable was fitted to the system.
o
The DC-DC converter was replaced along with a
new Ethernet port for PoE injection.
Friday, 2 December 2022
·
The previous days’ data were analysed and
plotted using GIS
·
Port measurements
o
It was decided to avoid shallow, muddy and
mangrove areas to prevent the issues of previous days.
o
Measurements in Port Reitz were completed using
the rebuilt DUGS system
o
Measurements were expanded to Kilindini harbour
area and shipping channel
